Eurospider on Ice

Crampons strapped on, climbing harness buckled up, rope attached – and we’re off! The Eurospider, Publicom and KYC Spider teams took a trip to the Rhône Glacier. This glacier near the source of the Rhône is located in the far north-east of the canton of Valais, in the central Swiss Alps. It is approximately eight kilometers long and has an average width of two kilometers. While it was a balmy 20 degrees Celsius in Zurich, the team on the glacier attempted to stay warm in maximum temperatures of 8 degrees. Once we got moving, however, the cold ceased to be a problem. The tour, led by mountain guide Leo Infanger, was exciting and action-packed. Things were easy enough until we reached the first crevasse, which required a skillful leap to cross. At the same time, teamwork was important – other colleagues were also secured to the same rope. Once we reached the highest point of our glacier tour, we could enjoy a stunning view over the entire glacier. All the participants were inspired by the astonishing landscape. After a brief lunch break on the glacier, we headed back past further impressive crevasses and potholes.

Following the glacier tour, we continued to Göschenen, where we immersed ourselves in the history of the village and the Gotthard Tunnel. Mr. Kilian T. Elsasser led us through the viewing galleries before showing us the bridges over the Göschener Reuss river – the perfect example of how traffic in Gotthard has evolved.
